Definition
Menopause is a natural event defined by the cessation of menstruation. One can say that after 12 months without regular cycle you are in menopause. It usually starts between the ages 50 to 55.
Perimenopause precedes menopause – the duration of the latter lasts from 3 to 5 years.
Estrogen levels may increase, causing swelling, breast pain and then decline sharply causing hot flushes or night sweats.
This period can be accompanied by weight gain.
When menopause occurs before the age of 40, it’s called early menopause. After the age of 55, it is called late menopause. Some factors can affect the age of menopause. Women who smoke are generally two years earlier in their menopause, for example.
Symptoms & Causes
The onset of symptoms is not mandatory; some women do not perceive any disturbance during menopause. However, others suffer very marked symptoms and look for a suitable treatment. These symptoms are due to aging of the ovaries. The intensity and frequency of the disorder varies from woman to woman. Symptoms such as hot flushes, day/night sweats, tender joins, decrease in energy or morale, weight gain, vaginal dryness, occur due to the lack of estrogen.
In menopause, the ovaries stop the production of hormones so that there is a lack of estrogen. The decline in estrogen levels will therefore affect the whole body.
There are two types of treatments: Synthetic treatments and natural treatments.
The treatment also known as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is reserved for women suffering from menopause: hot flushes, day/night sweats, joint pain and vaginal dryness. HRT is usually taken for 4 to 5 years. It is to supply the body with synthetic hormones that the ovaries no longer produce, namely estrogen and progesterone.
There are two kinds of natural treatments. Natural treatments based on phytoestrogens and those without phytoestrogens.
